Penny for Your Thoughts

My grandpa always used to say, "penny for your thoughts". If Matea says that to you, I'd decline the penny.

Yesterday afternoon, I was doing some last minute cleaning before leaving home to get Bella from preschool and then head to work for the night. Ironically enough, I was in the middle of cleaning up beads the girls had used earlier to make necklaces because I thought they would be a choking hazard for the kid who still puts everything in their mouth.

Then I heard a cry and a scared voice say, "Mommy I swallowed a money!". My gut response was, "You're freakin kidding me." She was not. You could see the fear on her face. I called Steve and told him quickly what had happened and let him know he may need to get Bella from school. Then I called our pediatrician you said she needed to go to the ER for an xray. It kind of seemed like overkill to both of us since she was breathing fine and talking and crying but we agreed it's better to be safe than sorry so off we went. Before we left though, I held out some coins and asked her if she knew which kind she swallowed so we could tell the doctor. She quickly picked out the penny and I was thankful that it was at least one of the smaller ones.

Tatey Cakes fell asleep on the way there and slept all through registration and triage. She woke up confused in the exam room and didn't even flinch when she noticed how handsome her ER doctor was (or maybe that was me who noticed, I can't remember). She gave the doctor her usual silent treatment and death stare which he thought was cute instead of rude. When he walked out, she sat up and said, "If the doctor cut off Baby Luke's head, wouldn't that be silly!" and then laughed hysterically. Our friend, Baby Luke, had surgery a few months ago to replace a shunt in his brain and Matea was very interested in all of the details. I swear, I never said they had to chop off his head to do it and I'm not sure why she was thinking about that yesterday when we were at the hospital for a very different reason.

Let me tell you, these people were way too nice. Kept calling her "Sweetie" and "Honey" and took her back to the special room to see her actual xray and meet other techs and talk about how cute she is. Then the doctor gave us a photocopy of the xray, showed us the penny in her stomach, and told her a little story about how it would travel for a few days and eventually come out. I told him he was making it sound way too fun and that if he didn't leave her feeling a little scared, we'd probably be back in next week with a different object.

So, Baby Girl is fine. Mostly, she's lucky she has good insurance and her little visit only cost us $5 instead of the hundreds or thousands that usually come with an ER visit. She's lucky she didn't choke and die like we've always told her she would if she kept putting things in her mouth (scare tactic style parenting at its finest).

That's My Girl

I'm in the kitchen making lunch and listening to the girls playing "babies". Here's what I just heard...

Bella: Well, you're not a good mama if you're feeding your baby diet pepsi.
Matea: No, it's ok, it's a baby diet pepsi.
Bella: Well, I still don't think that's ok.
Matea: No! She likes baby diet pepsi.

Excuse me while I wipe away proud tears.

Asleep at the Table

Just last week, Steve asked me which one of the girls had fallen asleep at the table like you see on "America's Funniest Home Videos". I told him it was Tatey Cakes and here's tonight's repeat performance to prove it...

Some say it's "unseasonably warm" here. I say it's freakin hot. Too freakin hot for the kind of money we pay to live in paradise. Yesterday was almost 100 degrees and today was in the 90's. Far too hot for an area without air conditioning.
So, we went to our community (mobile estate park) pool this morning bright and early at 9:00. The girls had fun and I was happy to wear my new Lands End bathing suit but mostly, I was irritated. The park just remodeled the pool a few months ago and decided to re-key the gate and force us to pay a $50 deposit for a new key. Really? The $350,000-400,000 you collect in space rent every month isn't enough to cover a damn key? When this key news broke, I declared to Steve that we were going to boycott the pool blah, blah, blah. Yeah, that didn't work out so well for me. One hot day and I caved.

Tatey wouldn't pose for a picture. Turns out being up until 10:00 the night before and being woken up early by your sister is not a recipe for a good day.

2 Girls + 1 Basket of Makeup = Good Times (and a huge mess)

The girls haven't played with their makeup in months, mostly because I totally forgot about it. We (meaning I) somehow had made the mistake of storing it within their reach and they were constantly makeup-ing the whole freakin house. So sometime around Christmas, I packed it all up and put it at the top of their closet. Their glam session this morning reminded me why I did that. Jenni and Beth, does looking at this give you high blood pressure?

Pictures from Today

Big thanks to Grandma for the new spring clothes!

Public Television Profanity

Matea was just watching a show while I did dishes. The announcer said, "Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman is brought to you by PBS Kids."

Matea said, "They shouldn't say PBS Kids. That's naughty."

"What? PBS Kids isn't naughty."

"No, they said PEE-PEE-IST kids. That's naughty."

"You're right, that is naughty but that's not what he said."

"So, I can say pee-pee-ist kids?"

Talking Cat

This morning, Bella started telling a detailed story about our former cat, Monterey, talking to her. She even acted it out.

She went into the hallway and said, "He was standing right here, but not like person, like a cat. I was over there. And then he started speaking but he speaked like a person not like a cat."

"What did he say?"

"I don't remember. But I do know that he was speaking to me like a person."

I'm just saying that if a cat talked to me like a person, I would probably remember exactly what he said. Also, what's up with the overusage of "speaking"? You're only five, it's ok to say "talking".

Mood Chart

Bella is currently working on a mood chart for Matea. I've been listening to them for the last ten minutes and here's what I know...

Matea is supposed to circle the face that reflects her mood right after she wakes up.

Her choices are happy, sad, mad, or half-way happy.

According to Bella, Matea's currently "half-way happy".

Lucky

It's easy to forget how much I value being a stay at home mom living on the coast. But yesterday, I appreciated it. We took advantage of the 80 degree weather, abandoned housework duties, ditched preschool, canceled my chiro appointment and headed to the Santa Barbara Zoo.
We all had such a nice time. Lots of animals, running around, and fun. Matea insisted that I read every single donation plaque that we came across and trust me, there are a ton of them. So our trip was filled with "In memory of _______, beloved _______. We will miss you."
When we checked out the gorillas Matea immediately said, "Hey, whey's his kitten?!". We've been reading Koko's Kitten and since all gorillas look alike to a two year old, she thought this was Koko and demanded to know where his kitten was. Once she understood that the gorilla we were looking at wasn't Koko, she had a hard time grasping the concept that not all gorillas have kittens or any kind of pet for that matter. It was very sweet and a good indicator that she actually is paying attention and retaining info. that we read.
And speaking of reading, we just discovered something new this week...audio books! I know, not really a new concept, but new to our fam. Bella has a few books with follow along cd's but doesn't really love them. Because we love the Olivia books and new Olivia tv show, I decided to look for more Oliva items at the library and stumbled across the audio book. It's fabulous. Read by that crazy Dame Edna character and almost as interesting for adults as it is for kids. I was amazed that after the first run through, both girls remembered details and Matea could easily recount the stories. Now I've requested some Ramona Quimby audio books (totally excited about this, I LOVED Ramona when I was a kid - Mom, remember my kick-ass Ramona book report that was enclosed in Ramona's face complete with black yarn hair?) and also PBS special on Koko and her kitten.

Disneyland

We got back last night around 6:30 from the girls' first trip to Disneyland. We drove down to Ventura on Saturday and stayed with our friend Alissa at her new house. Alissa's boyfriend is a firefighter and was nice enough to give us a private tour of his station. I'll try to post pics from the tour later this week. Thanks Nick!

Headed down to Disneyland first thing Sunday morning. We pulled up to McDonald's for a quick breakfast and Matea asked if we were at Disneyland. Yeah, no concept at all of how big and amazing the real deal would actually be. We got to the park late morning and had a little bit of rain but nothing heavy. Our first rides were the tea cups, Dumbo, and the carousel. We ate at the rain forest cafe that night and the girls picked out Disney Princess tshirts from the Disney store and baby character dolls. We headed back to Disneyland from about 6:30-9:30 and were able to walk on most of the rides. We didn't even have to wait for the big attractions like Autopia and the Finding Nemo Submarine!

Monday brought rain. Lots and lots of rain. We came prepared though and proudly sported our plastic ponchos. Matea slept through the worst of it and Bella didn't complain at all since we bought her some hot chocolate. We went to the Disney Princess Fantasy Faire where we got to meet Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella up close. Totally worth the short wait in line to have private time with each princess. We were able to go on lots of rides and then headed back to the hotel room to order pizza and dry our socks and shoes. That night we had dinner with the princesses at Ariel's Grotto. Absolutely worth the money. Bella was unbelievably sweet with Belle, her favorite princess and mama even started to get a little teary eyed because the moment was so special. We did rides around California Adventure and then headed back to Disneyland for a few hours to do some of the rides that had been more crowded during the day.

On Tuesday we got into Fantasyland an hour early so we were able to walk right onto most of the rides again. Then we went over to meet Tinkerbelle and see Pixie Hollow. Since it was our last day, Bella decided to try out some of the big kid rides. She went on Splash Mountain, The Matterhorn, and Space Mountain! I couldn't believe it! The girl who was freaked out by Pirates of the Carribbean wanted to go on the scariest rides.

We had a really great trip. The longest we ever waited in line was 15 minutes. And you know how Disneyland is filled with kids melting down and freaking out everywhere? Totally didn't happen to us. Both girls were angels the entire time and never really complained about anything and more importantly, didn't fight. I'm going to ask Bella to get a part time job so we can start saving to go again some day.

There are too many pictures to post here but you can check them out at
